How to Hand Letter: Printed Caps

Hello, friends & welcome back to our new lovely little lettering series! I have really enjoyed creating these tutorials, and I even conquered my fear of hearing my voice recorded (yuck) to create a helpful  video for this post.

Today’s post is all about creating printed capital letters. This is the next logical and sequential step in learning to hand letter after getting the basics down, because most of these letters only use downstrokes and upstrokes. I hope to transition you from the drills and warm ups you learned in the last post to creating printed letters, because as you will soon find out, there is a strong connection between the two.

Alrighty, print out your worksheet and let’s get started! (Remember to print this on the smoothest paper you can find. Regular copy paper will be too rough on your felt tip. You can read more about this in our first post).

You may notice right off the bat that I have written the letters out of order. Yes, I know my ABCs, don’t worry! I have tried to organize the worksheet to flow from the easiest letters to form to the hardest letters to form. They begin with letters that only use simple upstrokes and downstrokes, and by the end you will be creating curved letters like a pro.

At this point I’m just going to let my awkward little self take it away. Presenting my first ever hand-lettering video:

*(watch in HD)*

[Sorry about that awkward giggle at the end. I did warn you that I was a total newbie . . .]

Like I said in the video, those curved letters are going to be the trickiest, but doing these exercises will make our cursive letters next week a breeze. This week’s homework assignment is to try writing your name in all capital letters. If you use instagram, you can even tag me so I can see your hard work and cheer you on! @laureneolson

Of course, there are many styles and letter variations for you to try as well. A later chapter will be entirely devoted to variants, but feel free to get creative with your letter forms. I’m excited to see what you create!

I would love to know what has been helpful/what you still have questions on. Feel free to leave a comment below and I will do my best to help you out! Chapter 2 (Cursive Capitals) is set to release on Monday. I’m so excited, stay tuned!

Have a lovely little day,
Lauren
